ITE Foundational Equity Glossary Draft

The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Equity Committee recently released the ITE Foundational Equity Glossary Draft to move equity conversations forward and provide a consistent and standard way to evaluate transportation equity. The Glossary provides key equity definitions, common language, terms, and references, as well as terms to avoid and alternative suggestions. ITE provides the basis for each term and links to the sources they consulted, and notes that different terms hold different meanings for individuals based on their identity, unspoken emotions and assumptions, and their level of understanding in the racial equity journey. ITE released the Glossary as a living document that marks a starting point in describing some of the constantly evolving language of equity.
