This report focuses on the benefits of human-powered forms of transportation as alternatives to the automobile. It examines the economic success stories of several corridors of land that struggled as railroads but are succeeding as trails and takes a broad look at the land or right-of-way included in an off-road bicycle or pedestrian facility. The study examines trail and greenways as land use planning tools that aid in controlling the sprawl of cities, and finally compares and contrasts representative projects.
