Source: Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center (PBIC)

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs have long played a key role in making travel to school and community destinations safer for students and families. With the expansion of SRTS in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to include high school students, new opportunities are emerging to support the transportation needs of high school students with disabilities. This information brief discusses disabilities that impact young people, how Federal education policies inform transportation support, and explores opportunities for SRTS programs. The brief also highlights examples from Saint Paul, MN, Beaverton, OR, and Minneapolis, MN, where SRTS and transition assistance programs are empowering young people to advocate for their travel needs and support their independence.
