Case Study No. 15: The Environmental Benefits of Bicycling and Walking

National Bicycling and Walking Study
Source: Federal Highway Administration

Quantifiying the fuel use and pollution avoided by bicycling and walking involved these steps:

  • estimating miles bicycled and walked in the United States
  • estimating the "VMT tradeoff" for bicycling and walking - the extent to which miles biycled and walked substitute for miles that would have been driven in motor vehicles
  • estimating per-mile emissions and fuel consumption of these avoided mile driven, for four air pollutants - carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

This report is one of twenty-four reports in the National Bicycling and Walking Study series.
