Bike Sharing in the United States: State of the Practice and Guide to Implementation

Since 2008, more than 20 jurisdictions have been able to implement bike sharing in their communities. As bike sharing continues to gain popularity throughout the US, guidance planning and implementing is necessary to achieve a successful program.
This webinar shares highlights from a national study of existing bike share programs in large and small communities across the US- providing an overview of important considerations such as:
- Operating costs;
- Varying business models;
- And metrics of success
The presenters also explain different funding sources used to implement bike share programs, with a focus on federal discretionary and non-discretionary programs and associated eligibility requirements. To complement the findings of this research, Julia Diana with the city of San Antonio and Josh Moskowitz with Capital Bikeshare share insights and lessons learned from starting bike sharing programs in their respective jurisdictions. They also describe the planning and procurement process, as well as successes and unexpected challenges encountered along the way.
